| Michigan brought a
traditional, Big-10, ground attack offense into the Citrus Bowl. They got
pounded. “Wait,” Vol faithful will say, “so did Nebraska. They ran the ball
a lot and look at what they’ve done to us.” No, that’s wrong in several
respects. Nebraska employs an offense that merely emphasizes its ground
component while UT’s favors the air component. Also the ‘Huskers run a very
disciplined offense and have great team speed combined with air assets an
opponent has to respect. Tennessee’s team speed was the difference in the
2002 Citrus Bowl against Michigan. Toward the end of World War II, the German Luftwaffe introduced the first operational jet fighter into combat. The Me 262 was 100 mph faster than anything else in the sky. It was, however, too late and built in too small numbers to have a decisive impact on the war. American P-51 pilots found they could shoot down the new threat but they had to perform flawlessly to do so. Any mistake and the Me 262 could merely accelerate away, reposition and attack from another direction. The plodding B-17s and B-24s were often saved by the fact that Me 262 pilots had to precisely judge their attacks, given the 300 mph differential in relative speeds. The lesson was clear though, for the shape of post-war air forces: Speed Kills. If it’s any solace to the Wolverines: it could have been worse. So how did the team do compared to the Maxims? | General Neyland distilled ten
thousand years of strategic thinking into his seven game day Maxims. Around
the same time the General was winning games as UT’s coach another
philosopher/strategist was waging war in Asia. Mao Zedong fought the
Nationalist Chinese from 1925 until 1949. Mao suffered defeats and
privations but ultimately prevailed. Part of the reason the Communist
Chinese were victorious was the blueprint for operations that Mao drew up.
These have become the matrix for nearly every guerrilla movement or
rebellion since. Mao’s dictums show the way for a weak opponent to defeat a
superior adversary. When the enemy advances, retreat. When the enemy slows, harass. When the enemy halts, attack. When the enemy retreats pursue and destroy him. Looks an awful lot like the course of the 2001 SEC Championship Game. So how did the team do compared to the Maxims? (click above to go to the article) |

| On August 6, 1945, a B-29 Superfortress named the Enola Gay turned back toward Hiroshima to let the crew observe the effects of the terrible new weapon they had just unleashed. The co-pilot, Capt. Robert W. Lewis had been asked by New York Times reporter William Laurence to keep a log of the mission. Lewis noted such things as time of takeoff and the time the plane reached cruise altitude. At 8:09 (Hiroshima Time) AM Lewis, warming to his task wrote, “ There will now be a short intermission while we bomb our target.” (Click here to continue) | ||

| Toward the end of the Second World War in the Pacific, on Jan. 11, 1945, an air battle occurred. Capt. William Shomo and his wingman Lt. Paul Lipscomb, were on an armed reconnaissance mission in their newly issued P-51D Mustangs near the island of Formosa. They sighted a Japanese G4M (Betty) bomber about 2500 feet above them with an escort of twelve A6M (Zeke) fighters. Undeterred by the 13 to 2 odds, Shomo and Lipscomb did what any pair of red-blooded P-51 drivers would do in that situation and attacked. In short order they shot down the Betty and nine of the escorting fighters. Shomo claimed seven Japanese and Lipscomb got three. (Click here to continue) | ||

In the next-to-last paragraph of last week’s review your humble scribe wrote the following regarding the prospects for the Kentucky game: “This should be another opportunity to get our reserves some playing time but if we cannot put more pressure on Kentucky’s quarterback, this game will be difficult to win.” DEAR GOD, COACH, I DIDN’T MEAN IT!!!!(click here to continue)

| The world has, for the most part, forgotten that there were two D-Days on June 6, 1944. There is the one we all know about - the landings in Normandy. The other landing took place on the other side of the world on the island of Saipan. The second was no less profound than the first as Saipan was considered by the Japanese to be part of Japan proper. As the Saipan battle neared its climax the Japanese abandoned their defensive strategy of digging in and forcing the Americans into repeated assaults on bunker complexes that had cost so many casualties in other battles. The Japanese commander decided on a massive “banzai” charge, or frontal assault, to force the Americans off the island. (click here to continue) | ||

Notre Dame Much of the history of the American Civil War is the story of Lincoln’s search for a general capable of winning the war. He never could seem to convince his generals that the Rebel armies should be the objective not just the possession of this or that chunk of real estate. In other words they seemed to lack a certain “killer instinct.” They never could put their opponent away. In Lincoln’s case things came to a head after George Gordon Meade, known affectionately (click here to continue) |

| During the Great War the German Air Force featured a number of great pilots. Possibly the greatest of these was an ex-cavalry trooper who grew tired of waiting for the classic horse charges that would never come. He left the cavalry to become one of the “knights” of the first war in the air. (Click here to continue) | ||

| During the two biggest wars of the 20th Century, European commanders and politicians made a pastime of denigrating American generals and generalship. They thought John Pershing (AEF commander in WWI) too inexperienced to fight without French or British supervision. | During the First World War the British Army repeatedly attacked German positions using the same tactics time after time. The British Generals couldn’t seem to think of any better way to win than to kill tens of thousands of Tommies in these mindless assaults. After one such action the British Prime Minister David Lloyd George muttered that the English had, “... an army of lions led by donkeys.”(Click here to continue) | ||

| On May 24, 1942, after having led a ragged band of exhausted and bedraggled troops out of Burma, General Joe Stilwell uttered what may be the most lucid single statement in military history: "I claim we got one Hell of a beating. There was much to be concerned
about tonight for the future of the 2001
football
season at Old UT. There is plenty of criticism to go around. I think it
might be interesting to break down each game's performance in light of the
General's Maxims and see what went right or wrong. So here goes.
