NEW DELHI — As many as 10 million female fetuses may have been aborted in India over the last 20 years as families try to secure a male heir, according to a study published Monday in The Lancet, the British medical journal.

In the two decades since ultrasound equipment, which allows prenatal determination of sex, became widely available, the number of girls born in India has declined steeply, despite a law banning doctors from disclosing the sex of a fetus to parents.

Although the routine aborting of female fetuses has been well documented, the study puts new light on the scale of the practice. Experts in India said Monday that they hoped the study would prompt the government to enforce laws against the practice that are already on the books.

Because of sex selection, they say that 50 million girls were either aborted or killed because of the culture's preference for boys. Figures in China, Vietnam and Nepal would bring the figure to 100 million.

What is there to discuss? I support freedom of choice for women. You want to turn back the clock and force women to carry through pregnancies regardless of the circumstances (rape, incest) or the health of the mother. Neither one of us is going to change our opinions. So, why is it necessary for you to start thread after thread after thread after thread on the same hackneyed topic?

You use the minority to argue the majority, the issues of rape and incest and health of the mother are important, so we must acknowledge that Abortion can actually HELP the RAPIST, or prolong the INCEST, and can have detrimental health issues for women. However NONE of that has anything to do with whether or not a child deserves to be murdered, or whether a baby has less rights than the mother. We can tackle these issues, but first the most important issue is that PEOPLE are being murdered when there are other options that respect both parties and minimizes the number of victims rather than multiplies them.

And on topic, If it is women we are talking about, people who care about women should be outraged that these girls are killed specifically because they are female, yep, we are talking about womens rights here folks, we are talking about the females right to LIVE.
