I remember when BD and Donny had those rides at the Worlds Fair site. Hard to think of DA on Central Avenue after reaching those heights. Makes me remember Coach Webb with tears in my beer. Hard to think of BD coaching the Sacred heart boys team. LOL!Just remember you will always find a Starr behind every man if you look hard enough.

I'm one of maybe four people here who'll get that one.

"We thrive on the hate and cynicism we get from others because we KNOW we will win." - Irish BB team motto, 1974. (also rendered as "Hate, cynicism, and the knowledge we will win.")

BIL hits a homer!!
Somebody wanted to know about the original location, our ex City Councilman and ex Vice Mayor use to hold court inside that Central Avenue location. I would guess more CC business was accomplished there than anyone could imagine. Ashe use to meet up at the Krytal, that is a far cry from taking Lobster's home from Regas!!

Lets keep Steamboat rolling

Jack Neely of Metro Pulse gives high praise to Steamboat in the Feb 17 edition of MP.  Jack carries a lot of weight with the downtown crowd.

I was in Market Square tonight and with the great weather it was very crowded.  I finally got a chance to try out the Steamboat.  When I entered Steamboat at 7:15, I was their only customer.  There were three ladies/girls working there and they were very friendly.

With Steamboat's present setup, I think they are going to have a difficult time surviving in Market Square.  I don't know their financial backing but I'd recommend that they get a restaurant consultant to visit the place and evaluate the decor, prices, non sandwich food selection choices, and viability of selling beer.

I sat at the table near the wall mounted TV watching the Kansas game.  Several people would come to the front window, look in and walk away.  Some people came in and looked  at the numerous pictures on the walls and walked out without ordering.

The place is very clean but looks sterile - kinda like a school cafeteria with mostly two people tables.  The floors are concrete and the lighting is fluorescent.  I had a half of a Reuben sandwich (good but really nothing special) and small drink and I think the cost was around $8.50.  I probably made a mistake in ordering as a whole sandwich only costs about $2.00 more than a half.  IMO you get more for your money at Panera Bread and McAlisters with a lot better decor.  I'd guess that not having a beer license really hurts their business.

PV, since Steamboat is a sponsor, I certainly have no problem with you deleting this post. Give them a try sometime.

Here is as good a place as any to give them input. The Beer Permit is going to be tricky for them because of seeting space....

They are busy as hell during lunch M-F

Those 3 girls you saw, one was the founders daughter and one of the others Mother works at TVA Towers and herds the masses to her daughters shop.

I don't understand why seating space is an issue for a beer permit.  The space is huge.  Most of the space is not used.  It's certainly larger than some of the other restaurants on Market Square that have liquor/beer permits.

I'm surprised, but glad, to hear that they are very busy during lunch.  I hope that their business is not hurt by the loss of TVA's contractors.  About 300 TVA contractors is the north tower are scheduled to be let go around August when their design work for a nuclear plant is finished.

I wish success to Steamboat. I never had the privilege of trying them back in the late 90's.

Back then, my favorite sandwich place in Knoxville was Sarge's BBQ.
