Long-time EGP Sen. Evan Bayh announces today he will not seek re-election.

http://gatewaypundit.firstthings.com/2010/02/breaking-indiana-senator-evan-bayh-to-retire/

Bayh has @ $13 million in his campaign fund.  If I'm not mistaken, due to his being "grandfathered" into current Congress fund-raising regs, he gets to keep most of that.

Now, our resident moonbats will point out that currrently more SGP Congresscritters are "retiring" this cycle than EGP ones.  However, most of the SGP types are run-of-the-mill Critters who will now fade from obscurity to oblivion.  The EGP losses are VERY high-profile.  Bayh's standing is such that he was under serious consideration for the VPOTUS spot by Barry Hoaxandchange in 2008.  Barry must have felt that having a semi-competent VP would be a threat and so chose the clueless Joe Biden. Coming on the heels of Prince Kennedy the Lesser's announcement last week, this is marking a disturbing trend for the EGP.

The front-runner for the IN Senate seat in November is now former Senator Dan Coats. Coats served in the Senate for ten years, retiring in 1999.  Initially considered for SecDef by Bush '43, he was instead named Ambassador to Germany and served from 2001 to 2005. Since '05 he has been a lobbyist for several foreign clients.

Drive-By D-FENS,

You do realize there are more Republicans who are retiring from the House and Senate than Democrats? Whether they are "high profile" or not is irrelevant when it comes to who will have more seats after November. The "high profile" attempt at spin is lame ... even for you.

For you to call anyone a "moonbat" is comical. They don't get any more devoid of reality than you.

This President is destroying more Democrat political careers than the Clintons, I don't think he could have defended his senate seat despite all the front runner talk. This Democrat rot can't even defend the "KENNEDY SENATE SEAT" in the peoples republic of Massachusetts. Obama is destroying the cleanly manicured 'moderate' prodigies political career.  Not a good time to be flying the Democrat banner. The president is destroying his Party. I look for a Democrat primary challenge out of Democrat Bigh in 2012.

Can I call it, or can I call it?

Also, I forgot to mention Sen. Chris Dodd, (D-Countrywide) who is also bailing.

UPDATE!!! (Cue clattering teletype noises)

Now, rumors are swirling that Babs Mikulski (EGP-MD) is not going to run again either.

One of her complaints is that the health insurance that is provided for Congress is "poor" with high deductibles and "limitations" on coverage. My contact tells me that she told an aide that she should have inserted in the ObamaCare bill an amendment to improve Congressional health insurance!

Mrs. Mikulski was first elected to the Senate in 1986, and thus is a very senior member of the Democratic caucus. Despite this seniority, she has never been offered any important chairmanships or leadership positions. Born on July 20, 1936, she is 74 years old, come July...it is perhaps fitting that she has choose this year to retire.

Simply astounding. The guy has $13,000,000.00 in the bank, an alleged lead in the polls and he opts out because this administration is exposing him for the left winger he his. OMG, can you think of one radical piece of the Obama's legislative agenda the guy has not been in favor of the last 12 months?. Bayh = Pelosi = Harry Reid = Obama on all legislation to come down the pike the last 12 months. I did not realize the citizens of Indiana supported such a radical agenda. You can't play the middle of the road moderate game when you have been voting like a Socialist.

OMG,

I think the Bayh political punt is a defacto admission that he has been booted from his Party because he is not liberal enough. The paradigm of the left has become so skewed and slanted to the left Americans and liberal Democrats such as Mr. Bayh cannot even recognize the slightest hint of an American hue to the Democrat Party any longer. It is politically infeasible for credibility sakes for Mr. Bayh to remain in the senate and continue to cast votes for a left leaning extremest agenda and keep hopes alive he can be President some day. I think it was Krauthammer that said he (Bigh) is the Democrat political canary in the mine.

Just Wind,

You keep displaying for all to see how ignorant and uninformed you are.

The Dems "booted" Bayh??? Just what evidence to you base that ridiculous assertion on?

Oh, according to your earlier post in this thread, "this administration is exposing him for the left winger he his. OMG, can you think of one radical piece of the Obama's legislative agenda the guy has not been in favor of the last 12 months?. Bayh = Pelosi = Harry Reid = Obama on all legislation to come down the pike the last 12 months." So, just yesterday Bayh was a dyed-in-the-wool Obama liberal. Today you claim the Dems have booted him for not being liberal enough. Do you ever think before you post? Do you realize how moronic you appear when you make such glaring contradictions?

Yep, you've got I believe six GOPers who will not be seeking reelection. There is a lot of partisan fatique. Guys like OMG are just as big a part of the problem as the FLs. Different ends of the same stick.

Yeah, I can "call it" too. You won't respond to this thread. Your modus operandi is to post and run. You're a drive-by poster who is too much of a coward to engage in honest debate with people who don't share your draconian, conservative ideology. I predict you will make another outrageous post on another issue and completely ignore this one.

Senate:

5 Democrats are retiring to date: Dodd, Kaufman, Burris, Bayh, and Dorgan.
6 Republican are retiring: LeMieux, Brownback, Bunning, Bond, Gregg, and Voinovich.

House:

14 Dems are retiring.
18 Republicans are retiring.

Now matter how you try to spin it, to date, there are more Republicans leaving office because of the anti-incumbent environment in the country. That's even more amazing when you consider there are far more Dems than Republicans in the House and Senate. You would think, because of the numbers advantage, there would be more Democrats not seeking reelection, all things being equal.

Now, why don't you post something nonresponsive?

The most important question is which party will win the vacated seats. Here is the break down of the Senate.

Retiring Democrats:

Evan Bayh of Indiana
Chris Dodd of Connecticut
Byron Dorgan of North Dakota
Roland Burris of Illinois
Ted Kaufman of Delaware

Retiring Republicans:

Kit Bond of Missouri
Sam Brownback of Kansas
Jim Bunning of Kentucky
Judd Gregg of New Hampshire
George Voinovich of Ohio

Now let's look at this interesting tidbit from the House, which may give an indication of who will win in the Senate:

Two-thirds of the GOP retirees, 12, are running for higher office, a sign, party strategists say, that Republicans view their party as ascendant and are leaping at opportunities.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/02/11/AR2010021104715.html

Is Lemieux really retiring?

If they are all the same and it is just one big game with both Parties as your comment seems to indicate why the huge jump in the debt in 12 months? I think Party politics still matters and all are not simply the same regardless of vote. I certainly do not speak for OMG as he is more than qualified to defend his political convictions in a cogent fashion,  but the last time I checked OMG was not advocating the destruction of our economic system, confiscatory taxation, and a hedonistic ethic that leads to social and cultural breakdown as we see in the inter cities that have been under complete corrupt Democrat rule know for over 40 years. (ie - see Camden, Memphis, New Orleans, Gary, Oakland, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta .............). We have evidence in profusion that proves we have a major political Party that simply is unable to govern successfully and half of the other major Party that has lost the ability to lead and govern with effectiveness (ie -see the state of California's Chief Executive).
