Cinco de Mayo Festival Sunday at World’s Fair Park

The 8th annual Cinco de Mayo Festival will be held Sunday, May 2, in downtown Knoxville.

The event will be from 2 to 7 p.m. in the World’s Fair Park.

The translation of Cinco de Mayo, as many people know, is the “5th of May.”

While it is often thought to refer to Mexican Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo actually celebrates the defeat of French forces by Mexican soldiers on May 5, 1862, at the Battle of Puebla in east-central Mexico.

Mexico declared its independence from Spain on Sept. 15, 1810.

Why not have it on the 5th? People might feel better about all that drinking and eating on a Wednesday than they would a Sunday.
